When
Agriculture - or Industry, for that matter - stops and the land
is left to its own devices, what usually occurs is the appearance of trees.
Over time, and when conditions are perfect, these will eventually form
areas of scrub woodland. More than 75% of the land at Red
Pig Farm could be considered scrub woodland. However,
what is scrub woodland to some maybe something entirely different to others
. . . During the 1990s, Red Pig Farm was cleared of around 50 acres of Sitka spruce. Thereafter, through neglect, much of this cleared land reverted to scrub woodland, consisting mainly of pioneer species such as birch (Betula spp.) and willow (Salix spp.). For many professional foresters and woodland managers these species hold very little commercial value, and, if left unchecked, lead to reduced conservation value in single-species stands. The cost of managing broadleaf woodland, including areas of scrub, is often prohibitive to many. Where broadleaf woodland IS being managed, you can be almost certain that it is supported by Government grants or volunteer labour (or both). For us, these areas of scrub offer opportunities to create a patchwork of diverse woodland habitats by coppicing and creating areas of high forest, and the challenge of making these areas pay without having to rely on any financial support from Government grants or volunteer labour. Black Mountain Birch Beer is one of those opportunities . . . |
Birch
Beer is a soda-based soft drink, similar in nature to
Ginger Beer and Root Beer, though it has a slighly colder taste, with
a hint of mint - making it the perfect soft drink for warm summer days. The
story goes that early Dutch settlers in Pennsylvania began brewing birch
beer in the 19th Century.
Black Mountain Birch Beer will be available in small quantities throughout 2009, and by 2010 it should also be available through this website. We
are the ONLY manufacturers
of organically certified Birch Beer in the UK. No doubt more
will appear in time . . . . . but remember where you saw it first! Black Mountain Birch Red Pig Farm, Bethlehem, Llangadog, Carmarthenshire, Wales, SA19 9DR. Tel: 01550 740306 E-mail Us - Click Here |
